July Favola Five
June 2024

By Cait McNamara

As we near the end of another month (seriously, how is it almost July?), the ever-evolving world of social media keeps us on our toes. From Apple’s Genmojis announcement to yet another App by TikTok, here are five updates you need to know.

1. X takes privacy to a whole new level

X (formerly Twitter – when will we stop saying this?) have announced that user Likes are now private. You’ll still see your own Likes, but the days of stalking what your partner or fav celeb have liked are over. This update is all about giving users the freedom to engage with content without public scrutiny. Could this mark the end of cancel culture?

2. Apple introduces AI emojis

Ever needed a specific emoji, only to find it doesn’t exist? Well, struggle no more as Apple reveals its latest innovation: Genmojis. Using what it calls ‘Apple Intelligence’, this feature allows users to generate unique emojis simply by describing what they want. You can even use images of your friends to create extra-personal emojis. Genius or gimmick? We’re not sure yet.

3. TikTok takes a leaf out of Snapchat’s book

As if TikTok wasn’t addictive enough, the platform is testing a new feature called DM Streaks designed to foster more consistent interactions and boost engagement. In a nod to the feature we all know from Snapchat, TikTok’s version encourages users to send direct messages to their friends every day to maintain streaks.

With a largely similar audience demographic to Snapchat, it makes sense that TikTok would add this feature. Will it be as successful as Snapchat? All we know is that our screen time won’t like this update.

4. Everybody say “Whee”

We should know by now to expect the unexpected when it comes to TikTok. And this latest announcement is no different. Having only launched Notes back in April, TikTok has just revealed yet another photo-sharing App called Whee.

Designed to expand engagement opportunities and tap into broader usage trends, Whee allows users to share images to a grid.

Sounds a lot like Notes, and, let’s be honest, Instagram. So, what makes Whee different? Well, images posted on Whee will only be shared with friends, while Notes and Instagram can be shared with a broader audience.

Is there enough incentive for users to download another photo-sharing App? And is TikTok straying too far away from its original appeal? We’ll have to wait and see.

5. Instagram expands AI bot platform

And finally, after teasing the feature back in April, Instagram is developing the next stage of its AI bot creation platform. Designed to help with ‘admin tasks’, such as replying to fan comments and messages, creators will soon be able to build AI-generated avatars of themselves.

While it may save influencers and brands time, we have to ask if this feature is actually very ‘social’. Instagram is a social media platform after all. Will users appreciate a conversation with an AI bot rather than their favourite celebrity or brand? Only time will tell.
